Stump grinding refers to the process where the stump of a tree that has been felled is disposed of. Frequently during tree felling a couple of inches of the trunk and the root system are kept in the earth, making the close-by area impractical to use and also potentially appealing to bugs or harbouring tree diseases such as honey fungus. If your garden has stumps in the earth, taking them out can open up the space, offering added space that you could use to extend your lawn or provide fresh areas to fit patio or decking. Competent stump grinding firms can clear away stumps of any proportion.

The method normally calls for trimming the stump as close to the ground as possible utilising a chainsaw, and afterwards using specialised stump grinding equipment to grind away at the stump. Stumps are ground down to about 10-12 inches below the ground surface to allow for planting, although sometimes landscaping projects may require the stump to be ground deeper than this. The wood chipping that is generated by the stump grinding may be either infilled back into the hole and used as compost in other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company could remove it for you and dispose of it in an eco-friendly way. Also, many experienced stump grinding companies offer specialist slim equipment that can be used if there is limited access to your garden for instance, through a side passageway.
