Stump grinding is the process in which the stump of a felled tree is taken out. Usually during tree felling several inches of the trunk and the root structure are left in the soil, making the neighbouring area impractical to use together with possibly providing a habitat for pests or harbouring tree diseases such as honey fungus. If your back yard has stumps in the earth, removing them can open up the garden, offering extra space that you could use to broaden your lawn or provide fresh spaces to install patio or decking. Experienced stump grinding firms can extract stumps of any proportion.

The method typically requires trimming the stump as close to the ground as possible using a chainsaw, and afterwards using specialist stump grinding devices to grind away at the stump. Stumps are ground down to roughly 10-12 inches beneath the soil surface to allow for replanting, however in some situations landscaping projects might require the stump to be ground deeper than this. The wood chippings that are created by the stump grinding may be either infilled back into the hole and used as mulch in other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company can remove it and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. Additionally, many specialist stump grinding companies offer specialist thin equipment that could be employed if there is restricted access to your garden for example, through a side passageway.
