New Romney
New Romney is a small town in Kent, England, on the edge of Romney Marsh, a location of level, abundant agricultural land redeemed from the sea after the harbour began to silt up. New Romney, among the original Cinque Ports, was as soon as a sea port, with the harbour beside the church, but is now more than a mile from the sea. A mooring ring can still be seen before the church. It is the headquarters of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. Like many towns on the marsh it has an outstanding Norman church in the centre of town. This church originally stood at the harbourside, and its entrances are numerous feet underground level. The church is also remarkable for the watercraft hooks still apparent on the side walls. New Romney's historical high street has several tiny as well as intriguing shops. A few businesses closed after the opening of a branch of grocery store chain Sainsbury's, yet the town keeps much of its character. The former almshouses in West Street are kept in mind historic buildings of Kent; they were founded in 1610 by John Southland, a vital local magnate, and also rebuilt in 1734. Adjacent to these is Plantagenet House and No 3 Old Stone Cottage, which came from as a single residence created c. 1300-- 1350. Researchers think it was originally the house of the Master of The Hospital of St John the Baptist, a big nonreligious establishment. The hospital was running by c. 1260 as well as thrived till the close of the fifteenth century.
