Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth is an old market town and well-known holiday resort in Ceredigion, West Wales. Locals often call it Aber, and it sits close to the join of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol.
The University of Aberystwyth was founded in 1872 and has had a big student population ever since. At the 2001 census, 13,040 people lived there, not including the extra 10,000 students expected between September and June.
Although the name of the town indicates that the River Ystwyth runs through Aberystwyth, it actually borders it. Only the River Rheidol passes through the town.
Aberystwyth has a pier and a seafront that runs from Constitution Hill to the mouth of the harbour. Constitution Hill is a hill and walking area that has a funicular railway and a Victorian camera obscura at the top.
There is evidence that the space around Aberystwyth had settlers during the Mesolithic Age. Hunter-gatherers might have used the local flint to make weapons as the ice shrunk. There are also the remnants of a Celtic fortress on a hill overlooking Aberystwyth, meaning the site had inhabitants before 700AD.
