Honiton

Honiton is a market town and civil parish in East Devon. It is positioned next to the River Otter, and is about 17 miles (27 kilometres) north east of Exeter in the county of Devon. Honiton is at the junction of the A35, the A30 and the A373 roads. Honiton train station is on the West of England Main Line that runs from London Waterloo to Exeter. Honiton has a population estimated at 11822. The town grew along the line of the Fosse Way, the ancient Roman road connecting Exeter to Lincoln, on which it was an essential stopping point. The location is specified in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Honetone, meaning 'Huna's tun' or 'farmstead'. It became a crucial market town, known for its lace making that was offered by Flemish immigrants in the Elizabethan era. In the 17th century, great numbers of people produced lace by hand in their homes, and later in the 19th century, Queen Victoria had her bridal gown made of Honiton lace, though the gown itself was made in the fishing village of Beer. The town also ended up being known for its pottery. Honiton is host to the annual Honiton Agricultural Show, a traditional celebration dating back to 1890. The Hot Pennies ceremony occurs each year on the very first Tuesday after 19 July in the High Street of the town, and go back to the reign of King Stephen. The event has its roots in the practice of the landed gentry taking joy in tossing hot pennies from windows to regional peasants, a relatively humanitarian gesture causing burns. The custom additionally had the purpose of encouraging people to journey to the town from the surrounding area to attend a subsequent fair. For all your home enhancements, be sure to identify trusted professionals in Honiton to make certain of quality.

FAQs

Do I need toughened glass in my windows?

Whether you need toughened glass in your windows depends on where the windows are in your home or business. Toughened glass is sometimes referred to as tempered or safety glass, and it just means it’s stronger than the standard glass that’s usually offered with double glazed windows. So how do you know if you need it?

Toughened glass is useful in areas of your home where you might come into contact with the windows if you were to trip and fall. If you put your hands out to steady yourself on standard glass the chances are it would break into large sharp pieces with jagged edges. Of course, this means that you could seriously cut yourself if this were to happen. With toughened glass, the structure of the glass is changed so that if it breaks it shatters into lots of tiny pieces, minimising the risk to you if you were to fall on it.

You might want to use toughened glass in patio doors, low windows or frames next to doors. It just means that you will be safer if the unlikely happens and you or a family member falls through the glass. There are certain requirements through Building Regulations with windows at a certain level, but any reputable window installer should be able to go through these with you if you need to replace your windows with toughened glass. The regulations will only apply to new windows – there's no need to switch your windows to toughened glass early, but when you do come to replace them you’ll need to make sure they meet the standard.

What to put over a broken window?
A broken window is a nuisance and an unwanted expense, and it can often happen at the worst times, like overnight when installers aren’t available or when the weather is very bad. So you might need to put something over your broken window as a temporary measure before someone can come and replace it – but what should you use? If you’ve got a small crack, you could try using some masking tape. Cover the entire crack with the tape making sure that there is extra tape at each end of the crack. This will help to prevent the crack from growing further. However, this isn’t going to work on large impact cracks or shattered windows. For a shattered window, you need to make sure you remove all the remaining glass as the shards could easily cut someone. To make a broken window like this safe, you’ll need:
  • Thick gloves
  • A hammer
  • A broom
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Thick-soled shoes
  • Safety goggles
  1. Put your gloves on and use the hammer to remove the rest of the glass. Make sure you hit the glass away from you.
  2. Using the broom, sweep away any loose glass from the area, making sure you do both inside and outside.
  3. Use your vacuum cleaner to remove any small pieces of glass that you might not have been able to see.
Once you’ve cleared up the mess, you’ll want to cover your broken window with plastic and tape. It’s only a temporary measure so make sure you get in touch with a professional as soon as possible. Cut some heavy-duty plastic to fit the entire window. Using duct tape, secure the plastic over the window and make sure all the sides are sealed properly. It’s best to ensure that the plastic stays taught over the frame so it doesn’t get caught by the wind. Make sure you get in touch with a glazier or window installer as soon as you can – you'll notice a draught very quickly and someone could easily come and rip the plastic off. If you’re very worried about this you might want to add a chipboard over the top to make it more secure.

Can the glass in a double glazed window be replaced?
Yes, the glass in a double glazed window can be replaced. The glass in a window, or sealed unit to use its proper name, is not permanently attached to your window frames so if it gets damaged but your frames are still intact, there’s no need to replace the whole window. The glass in your double glazed window might need to be replaced due to:
  • Impact from a stone or other object smashing the glass in a ‘bullseye’ effect
  • The result of a break-in
  • Extreme weather or changes in pressure causing a crack
  • The sealed unit being ‘blown’, meaning that it’s no longer energy efficient due to air leaking out
A lot of window installers will replace the glass in your double glazing for you, but you might need to get quotes from specialist glaziers too. Glaziers deal purely with the glass in windows rather than installing entire frames. It won’t take a professional very long to replace the glass in your window. They will remove the beading from around the window with a pallet knife or chisel, leaving the top one until last to keep the sealed unit stable. Then, they simply lift out the glass carefully and will discuss with you whether the removal of the old sealed unit is included in their quote. Next, they will brush away any dust and debris that’s made its way into the frame and place spacers at the bottom. They will then lift the new glass into the frame, making sure it’s completely square. When they’re happy, they’ll remove the spacers and replace the beading back in reverse order. You’ll notice the replacement glass in your new window straight away as draughts should be eliminated and you’ll be able to see clearly again!
How to measure the glass for a window replacement?
If the glass in your window has been damaged, you might only need to replace that rather than your whole window frame. Common reasons for needing to replace the glass in your window include:
  • The glass has smashed from an impact such as a stone hitting it from a lawnmower
  • You have been broken into and suspects used the window to gain entry
  • The glass has blown (lost its airtightness) from constant water build-up around the seals, which is common in bathrooms
  • Extreme weather or pressure changes have caused a crack
If your frames are still intact and there’s nothing wrong with your window’s locks or trims, there’s no reason why you can’t just replace the sealed unit in your window. To help with the quotation process, a window installer may ask you to measure the glass for your window replacement. It’s pretty simple to just measure the sealed unit inside your window. There are just 3 steps you need to take:
  1. Including the beading (the plastic and rubber seals around the windows that can be removed), measure the width of the window frame.
  2. Do the same for the height of the window, making sure you include the beading.
  3. Then, take 10mm off each measurement, and you have the approximate size of your glass.
A reputable window installer will still make their own measurements before confirming the size of the glass in your window and going ahead and ordering the replacement. Make sure you get a range of quotes from local and national installers so you can compare the price and their quotation process.
