Wallingford

Wallingford is a historical market town and civil parish located to the south of Oxford on the River Thames in England. Historically situated in the county of Berkshire, it was transferred to Oxfordshire for the functions of management in 1974. Wallingford is located 12 miles (19 km) north of Reading, 13 miles (21 kilometres) south of Oxford as well as 11 miles (18 km) north west of Henley-on-Thames. The town's population was 11,600 in the 2011 census. The community has actually played a vital function in English background starting with the abandonment of Stigand to William the Conqueror in 1066, which caused his taking the throne and also the creation of Wallingford Castle. The castle and the town appreciated imperial condition and flourished for much of the Middle Ages. The Treaty of Wallingford, which ended a civil war known as The Anarchy in between King Stephen as well as Empress Matilda, was signed there. The town then entered a period of decline after the arrival of the Black Death and befalling of favour with the Tudor monarchs before being contacted once again throughout the English Civil War. Wallingford held out as the last continuing to be Royalist stronghold in Berkshire before surrendering after a 16-week siege. Fearing that Wallingford Castle could be made use of in a future uprising, Oliver Cromwell bought its devastation. Ever since Wallingford has actually become a market community and also centre of neighborhood business. At the centre of the community is a big free market square with the battle memorial as well as 17th century arcaded city center to the south, the Corn Exchange theatre to the eastern and also many shops around the sides. Off the square there are alleys and roads with more shops and a number of historic inns. Although it was a village, Wallingford once had 14 churches; currently, there are 3 old churches within the Parish of St Mary-le-More and St Leonard, a contemporary Roman Catholic church, a Quaker Meeting House dating from 1724 and Baptist, Methodist and area churches.

FAQs

How much is it to repair the glass in a window?
Accidents happen, and sometimes windows get broken. And that will lead to you wanting to replace just the glass in your window, rather than the whole frame. Also, as windows get older they can mist up on the inside, which means that the unit has ‘blown’ - so you’ll also need to replace the glass. But how much is it to replace the glass in a window? Luckily, if the frame of your window is in good condition, there’s no need to replace it, and this will reduce the cost. For an installer to fit a new pane of glass in a single glazed window, the average cost is £100, while a replacement double glazed sealed unit will cost an average of £110. Of course, as this is an average, if your window is very large you may spend more, and if your window is very small the price may be less. That's why it’s important to get a range of quotes so you can compare costs and get the best price. If you’re good at DIY, you may feel confident enough to have a go at replacing the glass in your window yourself. In that case, the cost of sealed unit and any other materials you need will cost an average of £57. It’s a significant saving, and if you think you can do it, then give it a try. However, if you’re in any way unsure, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. A window installer will be able to replace the glass in your window in less than an hour. Even though it costs more for a professional to do it, if you get it wrong and have to start over it will cost you more in the long run.
What to put over a broken window?
A broken window is a nuisance and an unwanted expense, and it can often happen at the worst times, like overnight when installers aren’t available or when the weather is very bad. So you might need to put something over your broken window as a temporary measure before someone can come and replace it – but what should you use? If you’ve got a small crack, you could try using some masking tape. Cover the entire crack with the tape making sure that there is extra tape at each end of the crack. This will help to prevent the crack from growing further. However, this isn’t going to work on large impact cracks or shattered windows. For a shattered window, you need to make sure you remove all the remaining glass as the shards could easily cut someone. To make a broken window like this safe, you’ll need:
  • Thick gloves
  • A hammer
  • A broom
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Thick-soled shoes
  • Safety goggles
  1. Put your gloves on and use the hammer to remove the rest of the glass. Make sure you hit the glass away from you.
  2. Using the broom, sweep away any loose glass from the area, making sure you do both inside and outside.
  3. Use your vacuum cleaner to remove any small pieces of glass that you might not have been able to see.
Once you’ve cleared up the mess, you’ll want to cover your broken window with plastic and tape. It’s only a temporary measure so make sure you get in touch with a professional as soon as possible. Cut some heavy-duty plastic to fit the entire window. Using duct tape, secure the plastic over the window and make sure all the sides are sealed properly. It’s best to ensure that the plastic stays taught over the frame so it doesn’t get caught by the wind. Make sure you get in touch with a glazier or window installer as soon as you can – you'll notice a draught very quickly and someone could easily come and rip the plastic off. If you’re very worried about this you might want to add a chipboard over the top to make it more secure.

How to measure the glass for a window replacement?
If the glass in your window has been damaged, you might only need to replace that rather than your whole window frame. Common reasons for needing to replace the glass in your window include:
  • The glass has smashed from an impact such as a stone hitting it from a lawnmower
  • You have been broken into and suspects used the window to gain entry
  • The glass has blown (lost its airtightness) from constant water build-up around the seals, which is common in bathrooms
  • Extreme weather or pressure changes have caused a crack
If your frames are still intact and there’s nothing wrong with your window’s locks or trims, there’s no reason why you can’t just replace the sealed unit in your window. To help with the quotation process, a window installer may ask you to measure the glass for your window replacement. It’s pretty simple to just measure the sealed unit inside your window. There are just 3 steps you need to take:
  1. Including the beading (the plastic and rubber seals around the windows that can be removed), measure the width of the window frame.
  2. Do the same for the height of the window, making sure you include the beading.
  3. Then, take 10mm off each measurement, and you have the approximate size of your glass.
A reputable window installer will still make their own measurements before confirming the size of the glass in your window and going ahead and ordering the replacement. Make sure you get a range of quotes from local and national installers so you can compare the price and their quotation process.
Do I need toughened glass in my windows?

Whether you need toughened glass in your windows depends on where the windows are in your home or business. Toughened glass is sometimes referred to as tempered or safety glass, and it just means it’s stronger than the standard glass that’s usually offered with double glazed windows. So how do you know if you need it?

Toughened glass is useful in areas of your home where you might come into contact with the windows if you were to trip and fall. If you put your hands out to steady yourself on standard glass the chances are it would break into large sharp pieces with jagged edges. Of course, this means that you could seriously cut yourself if this were to happen. With toughened glass, the structure of the glass is changed so that if it breaks it shatters into lots of tiny pieces, minimising the risk to you if you were to fall on it.

You might want to use toughened glass in patio doors, low windows or frames next to doors. It just means that you will be safer if the unlikely happens and you or a family member falls through the glass. There are certain requirements through Building Regulations with windows at a certain level, but any reputable window installer should be able to go through these with you if you need to replace your windows with toughened glass. The regulations will only apply to new windows – there's no need to switch your windows to toughened glass early, but when you do come to replace them you’ll need to make sure they meet the standard.
