Westbury

Westbury is a town as well as civil parish in the west of the English region of Wiltshire. It is situated in the far west of Wiltshire, close to the boundary with Somerset. It rests at the north-western edge of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 km) southeast of the city of Bath, around 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) south of the area town of Trowbridge as well as 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of the fort town of Warminster. Other nearby communities and cities consist of Frome, Devizes, Salisbury and Bristol. According to the 2011 Census, the community has a permanent population of around 14,709 individuals. In the past, Westbury was sometimes referred to as Westbury-under-the-Plain to identify it from various other communities of the very same name. Snuggled under the north-western bluffs of Salisbury Plain, it is below that the town's most renowned function can be seen: the Westbury White Horse. It is frequently declared locally that the White Horse was initially cut right into the chalk face as long ago as the year 878, to memorialize the success of Alfred the Great over the Danes in the Battle of Eðandun. Nonetheless, scholars believe this to be a development of the late 18th century, and no evidence has yet been found for the existence of the equine prior to the 1720s. Westbury centres on its historical marketplace, with the 14th-century cemetery of All Saints' Church behind it. All Saints' has a heavy ring of bells, an Erasmus Scriptures, and also a 16th-century clock without face constructed by a regional blacksmith. The west window of the church was contributed by Abraham Laverton, who also constructed Prospect Square in 1869 and the close-by Laverton Institute in 1873. For every one of your home improvements, make certain to identify reliable experts in Westbury to make sure of high quality.

FAQs

How to replace the glass in a uPVC window?
It’s not too difficult to replace the glass in a uPVC window, so if you’re a confident DIYer you could have a go at this yourself. We’ll go through the main steps on how to replace the sealed unit in a uPVC double glazed window:
  1. Using a rubber mallet and a strong pallet knife, remove the beading around the window. You might think they’re part of the frame, but they’re actually separate on the inside of the frame and can be taken out by using pallet knife to prize them out. Start with one of the longest beads first and leave the top bead until last.
  2. Give the glass a little tap to loosen it if it doesn’t come out straight away, then the whole unit should slide out easily. Just make sure it falls towards you and not back out onto the ground below!
  3. Clear any debris that has found its way into the frame with a brush. Add spacers at the bottom of the frame – these could be pieces of plastic.
  4. Get your new sealed unit (make sure you measure the glass before you buy one so you know which size to get) and carefully take it out of the packaging. Look for the British Standard mark – that shows you the bottom of the glass.
  5. Lift the glass into the frame, starting with the bottom first, and make sure that it fits square in the frame before taking the spacers out.
  6. Use a little washing up liquid to spread along the beads to make it easier when you slide them back into the frame. If they simply push and clip back in, you can use something like a block of wood to help you push them in correctly. Put them back in reverse order to how you took them out.
And there you go! If you’re feeling confident you can have a go at replacing the glass in your uPVC window yourself. But if you’ve got any worries, leave it to a window installer who will be able to do it in less than an hour.
How to measure the glass for a window replacement?
If the glass in your window has been damaged, you might only need to replace that rather than your whole window frame. Common reasons for needing to replace the glass in your window include:
  • The glass has smashed from an impact such as a stone hitting it from a lawnmower
  • You have been broken into and suspects used the window to gain entry
  • The glass has blown (lost its airtightness) from constant water build-up around the seals, which is common in bathrooms
  • Extreme weather or pressure changes have caused a crack
If your frames are still intact and there’s nothing wrong with your window’s locks or trims, there’s no reason why you can’t just replace the sealed unit in your window. To help with the quotation process, a window installer may ask you to measure the glass for your window replacement. It’s pretty simple to just measure the sealed unit inside your window. There are just 3 steps you need to take:
  1. Including the beading (the plastic and rubber seals around the windows that can be removed), measure the width of the window frame.
  2. Do the same for the height of the window, making sure you include the beading.
  3. Then, take 10mm off each measurement, and you have the approximate size of your glass.
A reputable window installer will still make their own measurements before confirming the size of the glass in your window and going ahead and ordering the replacement. Make sure you get a range of quotes from local and national installers so you can compare the price and their quotation process.
What to put over a broken window?
A broken window is a nuisance and an unwanted expense, and it can often happen at the worst times, like overnight when installers aren’t available or when the weather is very bad. So you might need to put something over your broken window as a temporary measure before someone can come and replace it – but what should you use? If you’ve got a small crack, you could try using some masking tape. Cover the entire crack with the tape making sure that there is extra tape at each end of the crack. This will help to prevent the crack from growing further. However, this isn’t going to work on large impact cracks or shattered windows. For a shattered window, you need to make sure you remove all the remaining glass as the shards could easily cut someone. To make a broken window like this safe, you’ll need:
  • Thick gloves
  • A hammer
  • A broom
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Thick-soled shoes
  • Safety goggles
  1. Put your gloves on and use the hammer to remove the rest of the glass. Make sure you hit the glass away from you.
  2. Using the broom, sweep away any loose glass from the area, making sure you do both inside and outside.
  3. Use your vacuum cleaner to remove any small pieces of glass that you might not have been able to see.
Once you’ve cleared up the mess, you’ll want to cover your broken window with plastic and tape. It’s only a temporary measure so make sure you get in touch with a professional as soon as possible. Cut some heavy-duty plastic to fit the entire window. Using duct tape, secure the plastic over the window and make sure all the sides are sealed properly. It’s best to ensure that the plastic stays taught over the frame so it doesn’t get caught by the wind. Make sure you get in touch with a glazier or window installer as soon as you can – you'll notice a draught very quickly and someone could easily come and rip the plastic off. If you’re very worried about this you might want to add a chipboard over the top to make it more secure.

Can the glass in a double glazed window be replaced?
Yes, the glass in a double glazed window can be replaced. The glass in a window, or sealed unit to use its proper name, is not permanently attached to your window frames so if it gets damaged but your frames are still intact, there’s no need to replace the whole window. The glass in your double glazed window might need to be replaced due to:
  • Impact from a stone or other object smashing the glass in a ‘bullseye’ effect
  • The result of a break-in
  • Extreme weather or changes in pressure causing a crack
  • The sealed unit being ‘blown’, meaning that it’s no longer energy efficient due to air leaking out
A lot of window installers will replace the glass in your double glazing for you, but you might need to get quotes from specialist glaziers too. Glaziers deal purely with the glass in windows rather than installing entire frames. It won’t take a professional very long to replace the glass in your window. They will remove the beading from around the window with a pallet knife or chisel, leaving the top one until last to keep the sealed unit stable. Then, they simply lift out the glass carefully and will discuss with you whether the removal of the old sealed unit is included in their quote. Next, they will brush away any dust and debris that’s made its way into the frame and place spacers at the bottom. They will then lift the new glass into the frame, making sure it’s completely square. When they’re happy, they’ll remove the spacers and replace the beading back in reverse order. You’ll notice the replacement glass in your new window straight away as draughts should be eliminated and you’ll be able to see clearly again!
