Montacute is a small village as well as civil parish in Somerset, England, 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) west of Yeovil. The town has a population of 831 (2011 census). An alternate sight is that it is called after Drogo de Montagu, whose family members stemmed from Montaigu-les-Bois, in the arrondissement of Coutances. Mortain held Montacute after 1066, Drogo was a close affiliate. The town is constructed virtually totally of the regional hamstone. From the 15th century until the beginning of the 20th century it developed the heart of the estate of the Phelips household of Montacute House. The town has a fine medieval church, and also was the site of a Cluniac abbey, the gatehouse of which is currently an exclusive residence. At the centre of the town is a big square known as the 'District' around which are organized picturesque cottages as well as a pub, the Phelips Arms; there is a second public house and also hotel located in the village, called the King's Arms.
