Alfreton
Alfreton is a town and civil parish in Amber Valley in the county of Derbyshire, connecting the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire districts. It was a Norman Manor before it became an Urban District, and comprises a modest population of roughly 7971, as per the 2011 census. Traditionally, the villages of Ironville, Riddings, Somercotes and Swanwick together form a section of the Manor as well as the Urban District, having a population of 24476 as per the 2001 census. The existence of conveniently obtainable and rich deposits of coal and ironstone within the area led for the development in significance of mining and iron-working in the finish on the medieval period, radically changing the classic agricultural economy. Huge numbers of compact workings and pits were constructed, and Alfreton became the chief coal-mining centre in Derbyshire by the 18th century. The improvement of those industries contributed considerably to the town's prosperity and attracted considerable numbers of workers, making Alfreton the third biggest town in the nation by the end of the 18th century. Population development led to the development of brick-making and tile-making industries within the town, in addition to boot-making, repairing and leather due to the need for industrial footwear. Because of the decline of the market in the middle of the 20th century, the pits shut in the 1960s and their sites are now employed for other development. Alfreton is a vibrant urban centre with a mix of chain retailers as well as a number of independent enterprises, including pubs, food outlets in addition to a leisure centre.
