Catterick Garrison
Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town situated 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies in the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided among the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided in between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a small stream generally known as Leadmill Gill, is inside the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Each parish has its own parish council. It's the biggest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13000 and measuring more than 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to become a temporary camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with about 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is anticipated to grow to more than 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its 1st large supermarket in 2000, in addition to a retail park generally known as 'Richmondshire Walk', which also contains a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher along with a Peacocks, amongst other shops. 'Catterick Leisure Centre' is a purpose built centre opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it delivers a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities which include a swimming pool, in addition to a fitness centre, as well as an adjoining public library.
