Berkhamsted
Berkhamsted is a medium-sized historic market town on the western edge of the English county of Hertfordshire. Situated in the modest Bulbourne Valley in the Chiltern Hills, it serves predominantly as a commuter town, as it is 26 miles to the northwest of London. According to population documents from 2013, the town has a permanent resident population of approximately 18,000, occupying roughly 7500 properties. There are plenty of structures in residential areas, with 77% of household areas being houses or bungalows and 23% being flats or maisonettes. Settlements have been in Berkhamsted for more than 500 years, supported by archaeological evidence of flint working during the Neolithic period and metal working in the late Iron Age and Roman periods. While farming, service and light industry were characteristic occupations in the area in 1986, the most important employers in the town in 2015 were educational institutions and retail. Nearly all of the firms can be found in the reputable Berkhamsted West ward. In 2014, the Academy of Urbanism's Urbanism Awards described the appeal of Berkhamsted's High Street as 'vibrant' and 'bustling', developing a 'pleasant' and 'successful' shopping location. There is a wide collection of shops and food retailers available to citizens and guests, boasting a mixture of independent and commercial chain retailers, cafes, coffee shops, dining places and pubs. For social opportunities, the Rex Cinema gives several current films for the people of Berkhamsted to watch. Being built in the art deco style of architecture in 1937, the Daily Telegraph has ranked the Rex as the UK's most beautiful cinema, and it was declared Britain's Best Cinema in the inaugural Guardian film awards in 2014.
