Devizes
Devizes is a market community and also civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire, England. It created around Devizes Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle, and also obtained a charter in 1141 allowing routine markets, which are held weekly in a competitive market location. The castle was besieged during the Anarchy, a 12th-century civil war in between Stephen of England as well as Empress Matilda, and again throughout the English Civil War when the Cavaliers (Royalists) raised the siege during the Fight of Roundway Down. Devizes stayed under Royalist control until 1645, when Oliver Cromwell assaulted and also required the Royalists to surrender. The castle was ruined in 1648 on the orders of Parliament, and also today little remains of it. From the 16th century Devizes became recognized for its textiles, and also by the early 18th century it held the largest corn market in the West Country, building the Corn Exchange in 1857. In the 18th century, brewing, healing of cigarette, and snuff-making were developed. The Wadworth Brewery was founded in the community in 1875. Standing at the west edge of the Vale of Pewsey, the community is about 10.5 miles (16.9 km) southeast of Chippenham and 11 miles (18 km) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. It has almost five hundred listed structures, some significant churches, a city center and also an eco-friendly in the centre of the town.
