Henley-on-Thames is a town and civil parish on the River Thames in the English county of Oxfordshire. It is situated about 7 miles (11 kilometres) northeast of Reading and 7 miles west of Maidenhead. The existing Corpus Christi fair was permitted by a charter of Henry VI. Henley is a world-renowned centre for rowing. Each summer, the yearly Henley Royal Regatta is hosted on Henley Reach, which is a naturally straight area of the river just north of the town. It was extended synthetically. The celebration came to be 'Royal' in 1851, when Prince Albert was patron of the regatta. The River and Rowing Museum, situated in Mill Meadows, is the town's one museum. It was established in 1998, and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The museum, designed by the designer David Chipperfield, features details on the River Thames, the sport of rowing, and the town of Henley itself.
