Hoddesdon

Set in the Lea Valley, Hoddesdon is a town in the Broxbourne borough of the English county of Hertfordshire. A portion of Hoddesdon became an urban district as a result of the Local Government Act in 1894, with the remaining area becoming the parish of Hoddesdon Rural in the Ware Rural District. Modification happened in 1937 after a County Review Order expanded the urban district by incorporating the whole of the Hoddesdon Rural parish. This stayed in place up until the Local Government Act of 1972 came into effect in 1974, which abolished the city district and formed the Borough of Broxbourne. Originating from a coaching stop on the route between London and Cambridge, it is 3 miles west of Harlow, 4 miles southeast of Hertford, 5 miles north of Waltham Cross and 11 miles southwest of Bishop's Stortford. Over 35 coaches travelled through the town on a day-to-day basis at the town's peak. With a population of 20250, Hoddesdon is primarily a commuter belt town. The High Street is home to a number of nationwide and local shops, fast food eateries and pubs, in addition to estate agents, charity shops, banks, travel agents and a library. After the removal of the High Street's pedestrianised nature in 2009, the town has actually experienced a growth in appeal, leaving the empty shop numbers very low. Numerous brand-new independent businesses have also established themselves in the High Street. The lakes and water pits remaining after the decline of gravel extraction in the 1970s are presently made use of as leisure facilities. The town is also home to a Non-League football club, Hoddesdon Town F.C., which is based at Lowfield.
