Penicuik

On the A701 lies Penicuik (pronounced 'Pennycook in spite of its spelling), a town in Midlothian, Scotland with a population of around 15,700. Positioned in between Edinburgh and Peebles, the settlement was developed as a planned village in 1770 by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik, coming to be a burgh in 1867. Its initial local industry were its famous paper mills, with the last of these closing down in 2004. The town name, Penicuik, is originated from 'Pen Y Cog', meaning directly, 'Hill of the Cuckoo' in Ancient British. The small town does have its worldwide links, and is twinned with the town of L'îsle-sur-la-Sourge in France. The very first occasion of the acknowledgment of the town was in 1296. Thomas Rymer's text Foedera details a 'Walter Edgar a person Penicok south of Edenburgh', and is what the town's name developed from and into today's spelling. Pennycook, another step on the ladder of Penicuik's spelling progression, appears on John Adair's map from 1862. However, in the background of the town itself, full growth commenced when the Cowan family arrived around 1770, and brought the business of their paper mill. This brought the need for homes for employees, leading to general population increasing to 1,700 by 1800. Penicuik was also used as the site of a prison camp for soldiers from the French Napoleonic wars, however in our present day, it is presently the site of a housing development. However, a monument dated back to 1830 commemorates the 309 prisoners who perished there during the course of the years 1811-1814. For all your home upgrades, make sure to make use of respected professionals in Penicuik to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How to install a TV aerial?

The process you need to go through to install a TV aerial depends on the type of aerial you have. If you have an indoor aerial, it’s simple. Just plug the aerial into your TV and stand it up next to it. If the signal isn’t right, then try moving your aerial closer to a window or higher up. Make sure you rescan for channels every time you move it so you know if you’ve made an improvement. It’s also fairly easy to install a loft TV aerial – just take it up into your loft and position it in a convenient place. Again, experiment with angles and positions to ensure you get the best signal. Installing an outdoor TV aerial is a little trickier. Ideally, try to fix your aerial to a wall or chimney at a gable end – this will be much easier to access than a chimney in the middle of the roof. Follow the instructions that come with your aerial for mounting it – it’s usually best to lash your aerial on rather than use screws. If you’re not used to working at height or aren’t confident doing your own aerial installation work, it’s best to get in touch with a professional.

What should I do if I’m experiencing poor TV signal quality?

If your TV picture is pixelated, poor quality, or cutting out, there may be a fault with your aerial or the cables connecting it to your TV. Also your aerial may not be located in the correct place. An experienced aerial company can carry out a survey to discover the fault.

Can I receive a satellite signal using an aerial?

No, you will need a satellite dish to receive a satellite signal for services like Sky or Freesat, as these are specific channels and programmes only broadcast via this medium. These can be installed in a similar way to a standard TV aerial by a recognised engineer.

What is satellite TV?

Satellite TV is a service that provides its customers with a wide range of TV channels by transmitting signals from a communications satellite. Users around the world can pick it up using a satellite dish mounted on their property and connected to their TV. Satellite TV is particularly useful for viewers who live out of aerial and cable TV range in remote areas.
