Welwyn

Welwyn (population 8,425) is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. The parish likewise consists of the towns of Digswell as well as Oaklands. It is in some cases called Old Welwyn to distinguish it from the much more recent settlement of Welwyn Garden City, about a mile to the south, though some homeowners dislike the pointer of inability or irrelevance that often tends to be suggested by the moniker "Old" and favor Welwyn Village. When stating where they live, residents will frequently be asked, 'Welwyn or Welwyn Garden City?', as the latter's title is usually shortened to merely Welwyn. To prevent confusion, there were strategies to alter Welwyn's name to 'Welwyn Minster' in 1990 but this met with regional resistance and also the concept was deserted. The name is originated from Old English welig definition "willow", describing the trees that snuggle on the banks of the River Mimram as it moves via the town. The name itself is a development from weligun, the dative kind of the word, and so is a lot more specifically translated as "at the willows", unlike nearby Willian which is likely to imply simply "the willows". Through having its name originated from welig rather than sealh (the more typically cited Old English word for willow), Welwyn is potentially cognate with Heligan in Cornwall whose name is originated from helygen, the Cornish word for willow that shares a root with welig. The close-by contemporary town of Digswell (around Welwyn North railway station) was originally called 'High Welwyn' when first created at the beginning of the 20th century.
