Aberdour
Aberdour is an old village on the south coast of Fife, Scotland. It is often called the Jewel of Fife because of its charming scenery. It had a population of 1633 in the 2001 census. It lies between the bigger towns of Burntisland and Dalgety Bay.
The village's name comes from the Pictish, which indicates that Aberdour has been around since the Dark Ages. Until the 19th century when the railway arrived, Aberdour was actually split in two villages. The railway has attained various 'best kept station' awards, and the ticket inspectors were known for singing down the carriages. It is a half an hour train ride to Edinburgh from Aberdour, which increased its reputation with commuters.
In the middle of the village sits Aberdour Castle. It was a small hall house overlooking the Dour Burn in the 13th century. The oldest part of it that remains is one of the oldest surviving stone castles in mainland Scotland. Close to the castle is St Fillan's church which is one of the best-preserved medieval parish churches in Scotland.
