Carnoustie

Carnoustie is a town and former police burgh within the council area of Angus in Scotland. It is at the mouth of the Barry Burn on the North Sea coast. In line with the 2011 census, Carnoustie has a permanent population of about 11394 inhabitants. This makes it the fourth biggest town in Angus. The town was founded in the late 1700s, and it grew rapidly during the 19th century as a result of the growth of the local textile market. Carnoustie benefited from the 19th century fashion for sea bathing. The arrival of the railway enabled the town to develop into a popular tourist destination, and it was promoted as the 'Brighton of the North' in the early 20th century. Carnoustie can be regarded as a dormitory town. Along with bringing industry to Carnoustie, the opening of the railway also made the town appealing for the middle classes, who made use of it as a commuter town for Dundee, further boosting population development in the town. Practically 50% of the employed population now commute to Dundee for work. It remains to be served by Carnoustie railway station, and significantly less so by Golf Street railway station. Its nearest main road is the A92. The town is best known for the Carnoustie Golf Links course that frequently hosts The Open Championship. Whilst golf has been played on Barry Links since the 16th century, a formal 10-hole golf course was laid out in 1850 to the design and style of Alan Robertson of St Andrews. This was later improved in 1867 by Old Tom Morris, who added a further eight holes. This course was redesigned in the 1920s by James Braid. FAQs

Do biomass boilers take up lots of space?

Many domestic biomass boilers are no bigger than a standard gas boiler. However, they do require a flue, a feeder and a space to store the fuel. These can be designed to suit many different properties and will fit in lots of homes or a garage or outbuilding.

Can I use a biomass boiler with other forms of heating?

Biomass boilers can be designed to work with other kinds of heating. The most common of these is solar thermal. This is a popular renewable energy pairing. Solar thermal heating will meet your hot water needs during the summer while a biomass boiler can operate as a backup during the winter when solar thermal panels do not perform as well.

Is a biomass boiler compatible with my existing central heating system?

Biomass boilers will work with existing central heating systems, presuming this is not decades old, whether they use radiators or under floor heating. A surveyor will check the existing system you have in place before quoting for or recommending a biomass boiler to you.

Do biomass boilers need lots of maintenance?

Biomass boilers do require some maintenance. Many manufacturers recommend servicing twice a year, although this is often included in the installation cost. Many systems have automatic fuel loading that removes the need to manually load fuel. You will need to remove the ash from the boiler, but this is as easy as emptying a vacuum cleaner.
