Alfreton

Alfreton is a town and civil parish in Amber Valley in the county of Derbyshire, connecting the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire districts. It was a Norman Manor prior to becoming an Urban District, and has a smaller population of about 7971, as per the 2011 census. Traditionally, the villages of Ironville, Riddings, Somercotes and Swanwick form a section of the Manor along with the Urban District, with a population of 24476 as per the 2001 census. The existence of quickly accessible and rich deposits of coal and ironstone in the area led to the development in significance of mining and iron-working in the finish of your medieval period, changing the regular agricultural economy. Large numbers of tiny workings and pits had been constructed, and Alfreton became the chief coal-mining centre in Derbyshire by the 18th century. The improvement of those industries contributed substantially towards the town's prosperity and attracted considerable numbers of workers, producing Alfreton the third largest town within the nation by the end of the 18th century. Population development led to the improvement of brick-making and tile-making industries inside the town, along with boot-making, repairing and leather as a result of the need for industrial footwear. Because of the decline of the sector in the middle of the 20th century, the pits closed in the 1960s and their sites are now used for other development. Alfreton is a vibrant urban centre with a mix of chain stores and a number of independent enterprises, including pubs, food outlets plus a leisure centre.
