Belper is a town and civil parish in the local government district of Amber Valley in Derbyshire, England. It is located about 7 miles north of Derby on the River Derwent. The parish is in addition made up of the village of Milford along with the hamlets of Bargate, Blackbrook and Makeney. In line with the 2001 Census, the town had a permanent resident population of about 20,000, living in about 8,800 households. Traditionally a centre for the nail manufacturing business, the town grew throughout the early Industrial Revolution to develop into one of the initial mill towns soon after the establishment of a number of textile mills. Due to these sites, the town forms a part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The town is in addition the original site of Thorntons, the chocolate manufacturer, started soon after the Second World War to try to resolve unemployment problems in the area. Though some manufacturing industries remain, the town is recognised mainly for its shopping areas nowadays, as it contains a supermarket, discount and independent retailers. In 2014, Belper was awarded the Street of the Year award for both the Market Town category plus the general award. This drew focus to the town's capacity to not just present a well-presented history as a World Heritage Site, but also to supply a successful market town. The award was believed to illustrate the extent of work that can be undertaken to develop a busy town centre into a destination for locals and guests. The town is also home to Belper Town F. C., who're presently in the Northern Premier League Division One South, plus the Belper Singers, an experienced chamber choir of 25 voices.
