Biggleswade

Biggleswade is a market town and civil parish located on the River Ivel within the English county of Bedfordshire. It is approximately forty miles north of Central London and twenty miles from Cambridge. Ancient settlements in close proximity to Biggleswade are considered to have been in existence from around 10000 BC, which is supported by archaeological evidence, such as arrowheads dating from the period that have been discovered within the town. According to the 2011 Census, the town had a population of about 16,500. Due to successful transport links, being situated along the A1 road between London and the North, as well as getting a railway station within the most important rail link North from London, the population has increased by almost 10% during the last ten years. This progress is anticipated to carry on due to new housing developments. Traditionally, Biggleswade was a vegetable growing region with a great deal of the produce being taken to be sold in London, like Covent Garden. Despite the fact that a lot of the trade has closed, Bedfordshire Growers, located on the outskirts of the town, still provide the main United Kingdom supermarkets in the UK with potatoes and onions grown in Biggleswade. Biggleswade is also home to the headquarters for Jordan's cereals, a company that produces numerous types of muesli and granola. Sports and leisure activities play an important part in the local community.
