Ashbourne

Ashbourne is a market town within the Derbyshire Dales in England. Because of its proximity to the southern edge of the Peak District and being the nearest town to the well-known location of Dovedale, the town is referred to as both the 'Gateway to Dovedale' and also the 'Gateway to the Peak District'. This has meant that tourism has always been vital to the town's economy. As outlined by the 2011 Census, the town features a resident population of around 8377 inhabitants. It consists of many historical buildings and a lot of independent shops and is popular for its traditional yearly Shrovetide football match. The cobbled marketplace hosts a traditional outdoor market each Thursday and Saturday all through the year, complementing the large array of individual shops within the town. While its market heritage is important, Ashbourne's market was threatened with closure by Derbyshire County Council in November 2012. Residents of Ashbourne have stood against any such moves by the council and created an online petition. Ashbourne became the 97th Fairtrade Town in March 2005 following a lot of local businesses, cafes, shops and community organisations started supporting Fairtrade. Ashbourne has a remarkable quantity of public houses for a very small town centre. At the moment, there are ten pubs open, together with 2 social clubs. The renowned and rare 'gallows' sign across St John's Street remains a focal meeting point within the town. Local historians have noted that nearly 1 in 4 buildings inside the town have at one time or another been an alehouse, pub or inn or were redeveloped on the site of such an establishment.
