Lee-on-the-solent

Lee-on-the-Solent is a modest seaside district in the Borough of Gosport in the English county of Hampshire. Set on the coast of the Solent dividing mainland England from the Isle of Wight, it is around 5 miles from Portsmouth. The district acquired its name in the 19th century, at a time of proposals being made to establish the location as a popular seaside resort. Physical adjustments to the area also occurred throughout this time, with the development of Mine Parade, a pier, a railway connection and a number of popular red brick villas all taking place in the period between 1884 and 1894. The railway service was discontinued in the 1930s, and the damage to the pier following the 2nd World War resulted in its demolition in 1958. While mainly a residential area, having a population of around 20000, it continues to witness a deluge of holiday-makers and visitors over the summer season. The district equally continues to have a vibrant shopping centre, providing a broad variety of independent and commercial chain stores and eateries. The closure of the train line cleared the coastal cliffs, enabling walking and leisure activities. An appealing characteristic of Lee is the constantly changing views out to sea from the cliffs. Observable from the grassy banks are large container ships, cruise ships moving into Southampton and Portsmouth and the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. Lee is known most particularly for being the the home of the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus. In spite of its closure in 1966, it remains active as a civil airfield.
