The town is also the original place of Thorntons, the chocolate manufacturer, started just after the Second World War to try to resolve high unemployment . Even though some manufacturing industries are still in existence, the town is recognised predominantly for its retail areas nowadays, as it boasts a supermarket, discount retailers and independent retailers. In 2014, Belper was given the Street of the Year award for both the Market Town category and also the award overall. This created focus to the town's capacity to not merely provide a meticulous history as a World Heritage Site, but also to provide a bustling market town. The award was believed to recognise the scope of work that can be done to turn a buzzing town centre into an attraction for both locals and guests. The town is also home to Belper Town F.
