Godalming

Godalming is a cultural market town, civil parish and administrative centre of the Borough of Waverley in Surrey. It is located 4 miles south-southwest of Guildford, traversing the banks of the River Wey in a tightly wooded and rangy area of the outer London commuter belt, and the Greensand Ridge. The town is 30.5 miles southwest of London, and is a part of a three-way twinning plan with the French town of Joigny and Mayen in Germany, as well as having a friendship link with the state of Georgia. James Oglethorpe of Godalming established the colony of Georgia. The Weald, a remnant forest being composed of modest wooded settlements, connects the town to the southwest and the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be discovered 2.9 miles north of the town centre. Godalming Town Council has declared that Godalming holds 138 listed buildings, of which 82 are situated immediately within the town centre, and 18 of which are monuments. The striking Tudor timber framed structures, 17th-century brickwork structures and different other structures can be found on the locally listed structures register. 'The Pepperpot', which is Godalming's first town hall, is among its most renowned landmarks. Godalming continues to be a traditional English market town, holding a market every Friday throughout the year and being the home of a wide array of independent and national retailers. As a result of its visual appeal and convenient transportation connections, the town has been selected as Britain's 3rd finest property hotspot, ranked as the 4th finest region of the UK in which to live, and reckoned to have the highest quality of life in 2013.
