Bellshill
Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's positioned 10 miles south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles to the west of Edinburgh, as well as being in close proximity to other towns like Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it has been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 20,705, a report by the Halifax Building Society indicated that in the 1st quarter of 2005, the town was the UK's property hotspot, seeing a rise in home prices by 46%. This led to the standard house price as being £105,698. It's believed that the town dates from the seventeenth century, which originally contained a line of quarry workers' houses owned by Mr. Bell, the owner of a stone quarry to the south of the town. The improvement of Bellshill, however, mostly came about soon after the quarry closing at the start of the 19th century. Developments have continued throughout the twentieth century. Recently, the Streetscape Project, a project which aims to attain the town's regeneration and modernisation of the town centre, took place between 2007 and 2010. This designed a one way system around the main street making the area more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised particularly for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands such as the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub hailing from the town. A Channel 4 TV series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
