Belper

Belper is a town and civil parish inside the local government district of Amber Valley in Derbyshire, England. It's situated roughly 7 miles to the north of Derby on the River Derwent. The parish is also made up of the village of Milford as well as the hamlets of Bargate, Blackbrook and Makeney. Based on the 2001 Census, the town had a permanent resident population of roughly 20,548, living in around 8,790 households. Historically a centre for the nail-making industry, the town developed throughout the early Industrial Revolution to turn into one of the first mill towns soon after the construction of numerous textile mills. Because of these sites, the town forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The town is also the original place of Thorntons, the chocolate manufacturer, created following the Second World War in an attempt to resolve high unemployment in the area. Though some manufacturing industries are still in existence, the town is recognised mainly for its shopping areas today, as it contains a supermarket, discount shops and independent retailers. In 2014, Belper was given the Street of the Year award for both the Market Town category and the overall award. This drew focus to the town's capability to not only present a lengthy history as a World Heritage Site, but additionally to supply a bustling market town. The award was believed to illustrate the scope of work that can be completed to turn a bustling town centre into an attraction for both locals and tourists. The town is also home to Belper Town F. C., who're currently within the Northern Premier League Division One South, plus the Belper Singers, an experienced chamber choir of 25 voices.
