Their vision was to establish a spa, emerging after failed attempts to discover coal unexpectedly revealed the presence of 2 springs. The spa consisted of 6 three-storeyed, semi-detached lodging homes forming a crescent, a pump room and cold and hot personal baths. At the exact same time, a parliamentary act was passed to 'improve the pleasing town of Melksham' through paving and enhancing footways, as well as cleansing, lighting and watching the streets.
