Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Documented as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town derives from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partially or completely surrounded by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and well established history as a production and trading town. The town obtained a charter to have a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be convened at the Manor of Elland and at two fairs during the year. The town rapidly ended up being a prime spot for wool production, and its decline in the 20th century had a far-reaching effect on the population, with a large number of mills being converted to properties, if they were not knocked down. Quarried near the town after the establishment of the canal, tough flagstones were brought cheaply around the country. Elland was the the home of the primary factory of the manufacturer of Gannex items and it is presently the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which produces a series of old-school kinds of boiled sweets. Suma Wholefoods has been located in the town since 2001, which is the largest worker's co-operative. A variety of landmarks are also discovered in the area, featuring St. Mary the Virgin parish church, the Old Town Hall and Southgate Methodist Church.
