Abbots Leigh

Abbots Leigh is a civil parish in Somerset. It is about 3 miles west of the centre of Bristol.

Originally, the Middle English name of the village was Lega, and it didn't become Abbots Leigh until the mid-12th century. It has a modest population of 799.

The village has an interesting history. The manor house, which is named after the village, housed Charles II when he escaped to France in 1651. He stayed with friends of the King's travelling companion and they had no idea of the King's identity during his stay. There is a footpath named Monarch's Way that commemorates the King's escape route through Abbots Leigh.

Abbots Leigh has a Gothic church of the Holy Trinity, founded in the 15th century. It was restored and partially rebuilt between 1847-48 after a fire. The tower encases six bells, and three of them were cast by William Bilbie in 1781. It is a Grade II listed building under English Heritage.

Leigh Woods encompasses Abbots Leigh and is preserved by the National Trust. There are several walk maps available online for guests to enjoy.

If you live in Abbots Leigh and need to carry out some home upgrades, ensure you get quotations from at least three respected tradespeople before you make a decision on who to choose.

FAQs

Will my garage conversion cause disruption to the rest of the house?

It shouldn’t do. Most companies will do all the interior work first, and the last job to do will be creating the opening from the house to the conversion. A reputable company will make sure they cause as little disruption as possible during this time.

how long does a garage conversion take?

Garage conversion is a great way to add extra usable space to your home without having to extend your property. A fun fact is that, in the UK if you have your car parked in the garage, you’re in the minority. According to a research carried out by Admiral Loans, just about 33 percent of home owners in the UK store their cars in the garage. For most people the garage is literally a dumping ground that’s never fully utilized as such. In recent times, the garage is now being used to store a variety of other stuffs asides a car which includes garden furniture, tools and appliances, utilities such as washing machine, fridge and freezer as well as food and groceries. These facts show that more and more people are underutilizing their garage when they may actually be in need of more usable space in their property. So why not put into consideration converting the garage into a new space that would be able to serve more purpose?

If you’ve decided to convert your garage, you’d probably want to know the how long the project will take. There are a wide range of factors that can determine the duration of a garage conversion project. These factors include:

• If the foundation needs reinforcing

• If the floors, walls, or roofs are in a bad condition.

• If the ceiling height needs some raising

• If the insulation required in newer builds.

All aforementioned factors will make the garage conversion project take longer than expected. However, in normal situations garage conversions are relatively quick to complete once you start the building works. A single-car conversion will usually take about 3 to 4 weeks to complete depending on the existing garage’s structure.

Will the company deal with the building control application?

Most companies will make the building control application on your behalf and ensure that all the work is completed to the right standards. When a building inspector has inspected it, you’ll get a certificate. It usually takes around 6-8 weeks after completion to come.

Will I need planning permission or building regulations approval?

You may need planning permission if you are planning a larger extension. All extensions will need building regulations approval. An architect can assist with this and if planning permission is required. A reputable contractor will also be able to advise you if this is needed as well.
