Ashbourne is a market town in the Derbyshire Dales in England. Because of its proximity to the southern edge of the Peak District and being the nearest town to the well-liked location of Dovedale, the town is known as both the 'Gateway to Dovedale' as well as the 'Gateway to the Peak District'. Because of this tourism has constantly been vital to the town's economy. According to the 2011 Census, the town features a resident population of about 8377 inhabitants. Although its market heritage is significant, Ashbourne's market came under threat of closure from Derbyshire County Council in November 2012. Residents of Ashbourne have stood against any such moves by the council and created an online petition. Ashbourne became the 97th Fairtrade Town in March 2005 following a lot of local companies, cafes, shops and community organisations began supporting Fairtrade. Ashbourne has a considerable variety of public houses for a very small town centre. At the moment, you can find ten pubs trading, as well as two social clubs. The famous and rare 'gallows' sign across St John's Street is still central meeting point within the town.
