Archway

Archway is a district inside the London Borough of Islington in inner north London. It's situated around the A1 and centred on Archway Tower and tube station. Archway has seven small parks and two large parks.

The name derives from the Archway bridge which was built in part of south Highgate for the minor road between south Highgate and Crouch End, Hornsey, in 1896. It had been attempted several times to construct a tunnel for the Highgate bypass, to join the Great North Road by avoiding the steep Highgate Hill and Highgate village's narrow roads. However, these tunnels failed on collapsing.

Archway designates the smaller than 0.4 square miles catchment of its underground station compared to all other stations. The official parishes and neighbourhoods within its definition are Highgate and Upper Holloway with a little part of Islington. In contemporary times, Upper Holloway is commonly restricted to the smaller sized catchment around its own railway station and post office.

Seven bus routes finish or commence at Archway and the term became common amongst most Londoners when its tube station abandoned the prior name of Highgate. The Archway Road is a part of the A1 or Great North Road, which is one of the original toll roads. From 1813-1864, Archway was the location of a toll gate. A plaque on the block of flats at 1 Pauntley Street commemorates the gate.

FAQs

How to choose an architect for home building?

When you’re trying to decide on an architect to hire, start by making sure that all the professionals you consider specialise in residential architectural services. The architect you choose needs to be an expert in and have plenty of experience working on similar projects to yours.

It’s also important to factor in what other customers think. Look for online reviews of the professionals you find, ask to see portfolios of their work and even ask for references. This will help to give you an idea of whether they’re skilled and reliable.

Make sure you also meet and have a discussion with any architects you’re considering hiring for your home building project. It’s vital for you to get on with them and to share the same vision, otherwise you’ll struggle to get the end result you want.

Will a commercial architect be expensive?

Not necessarily. Commercial architects may charge either a fixed fee, an hourly rate, or a percentage of the building contract. They could also save you substantial amounts of money as their plans and drawings may stop issues arising later in the construction.

What does an architect do?

Architects specialise in designing new properties, extensions and interior layouts. Land and property owners typically hire an architect to help them create structures that compliment their environment, make best practical use of space, are structurally sound and meet budget requirements.

Architects typically offer design and project management services. This means that they’re involved in a project from start to finish, creating a concept, submitting planning and other applications, and managing construction. However, you can also hire an architect just to create your design and plans.

Do I need an architect for an extension?

It’s not essential to hire an architect for a new extension project, but it can help you get a good result.

If you’d like to put your whole extension project in the hands of a professional, hiring an architect is a great idea. They’ll work with you to create the design you want, and can manage planning applications and work with building contractors to make sure your extension ends up just the way you want it.

However, if you want to save money, there are plenty of other options. Even if you’ve got good vision, you’ll need a professional of some kind to draw up plans for you. Either hire an architect to only do design work, or hire a design and build company to do the whole thing for you. If you’ve got the skills, you could even commission a design professional to draw up the plans and then build the thing yourself.

There are lots of design professionals out there, with different levels of experience and skill. So, it’s a good idea to pick a professional who has the level of skill to match your needs.
