Chathill

Chathill is a village in Northumberland, in England. It is positioned about 9 miles (14 km) north of Alnwick and three miles (5 km) inland from the North Sea coast. Chathill is in the parliamentary constituency of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The village features a permanent population of below 10000 people. It's served by Chathill railway station. The station also serves the nearby villages of Seahouses, Embleton, Bamburgh and Belford. Though located on the East Coast Main Line, the station is served by just two arrivals and departures, Mondays to Saturdays, delivering commuting links both to and from Newcastle upon Tyne. The station was for a lot of years served by loco-hauled stopping trains in between Newcastle, Berwick-upon-Tweed & Edinburgh Waverley (the British Rail timetable for 1982 had four departures each way from here), but these were reduced in frequency and, therefore, curtailed at Berwick by BR at the latter end of the 1980s and subsequently withdrawn altogether north of Chathill after the introduction of electric working on the ECML in 1991. Chathill is known as being home to Preston Pele Tower, which was built between 1392 and 1399. One of its former owners was Sir Guiscard Harbottle of Beamish, who was killed at the Battle of Flodden, the conflict between the Kingdom of England and Scotland, who was also an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales. The tower features a clock, which was established in 1864, and it features mechanisms comparable to Big Ben. FAQs

Do I need an architect to build a house?

Like building an extension, you’re not legally required to hire an architect to build a house. However, given the amount of money you’ll be investing in your project, it’s vital to get it right. Clear, accurate plans are essential for any builder or other tradesperson to get the right materials in the right place. Building projects that go wrong because of inaccurate plans can at best look odd, and at worst be structurally unsound.

We’d recommend hiring either an architect or a skilled design and build company to create the plans for your new house. If you hire an architect to do your designs, you can choose whether to involve them further in your project, or use another professional or your own skills to take care of any applications and project management.

How to choose an architect for home building?

When you’re trying to decide on an architect to hire, start by making sure that all the professionals you consider specialise in residential architectural services. The architect you choose needs to be an expert in and have plenty of experience working on similar projects to yours.

It’s also important to factor in what other customers think. Look for online reviews of the professionals you find, ask to see portfolios of their work and even ask for references. This will help to give you an idea of whether they’re skilled and reliable.

Make sure you also meet and have a discussion with any architects you’re considering hiring for your home building project. It’s vital for you to get on with them and to share the same vision, otherwise you’ll struggle to get the end result you want.

Do I need an architect for an extension?

It’s not essential to hire an architect for a new extension project, but it can help you get a good result.

If you’d like to put your whole extension project in the hands of a professional, hiring an architect is a great idea. They’ll work with you to create the design you want, and can manage planning applications and work with building contractors to make sure your extension ends up just the way you want it.

However, if you want to save money, there are plenty of other options. Even if you’ve got good vision, you’ll need a professional of some kind to draw up plans for you. Either hire an architect to only do design work, or hire a design and build company to do the whole thing for you. If you’ve got the skills, you could even commission a design professional to draw up the plans and then build the thing yourself.

There are lots of design professionals out there, with different levels of experience and skill. So, it’s a good idea to pick a professional who has the level of skill to match your needs.

Can a residential architect help me with planning permission?

Yes. Residential architects are invaluable and will be able to manage the application process as well as offer you advice on the best way to design your building to satisfy the local authority. They can also help with ideas as well as advising on what is possible and what is not possible.
