Y Felinheli

Y Felinheli, formerly known in English as Port Dinorwic, is a village, area and also electoral ward next to the Menai Strait between Bangor and Caernarfon in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. The population of the town was 2,284 at the 2011 Census. Y Felinheli has its origins in 2 communities, Tafarngrisiau near St Mary's Church and Aberpwll to the north-east where there was a mill on the Afon Heulyn. The mill was rebuilt closer to the sea in 1633 and also gave its name to the settlement. The location was greatly farming until the location was changed by slate quarrying in the 19th century. A new dock was constructed in 1828 when lime was removed at Brynadda and also slate and lime were filled and also culm (coal dust or anthracite slack) was generated to terminate the lime kilns. The owners of the Vaynol Estate, the Assheton Smiths, had a lot of the land in Y Felinheli and also established the Dinorwic Quarry in the late 18th century, They also built the harbour to export slate carried to the quay by the Dinorwic Railway, a slim gauge train that was ultimately changed by the Padarn Railway. Industrial development gave Y Felinheli (Felin-hely, 1838) the alternate name Port Dinorwig or Port Dinorwic.

FAQs

Can a residential architect help me with planning permission?

Yes. Residential architects are invaluable and will be able to manage the application process as well as offer you advice on the best way to design your building to satisfy the local authority. They can also help with ideas as well as advising on what is possible and what is not possible.

Do I need an architect to build a house?

Like building an extension, you’re not legally required to hire an architect to build a house. However, given the amount of money you’ll be investing in your project, it’s vital to get it right. Clear, accurate plans are essential for any builder or other tradesperson to get the right materials in the right place. Building projects that go wrong because of inaccurate plans can at best look odd, and at worst be structurally unsound.

We’d recommend hiring either an architect or a skilled design and build company to create the plans for your new house. If you hire an architect to do your designs, you can choose whether to involve them further in your project, or use another professional or your own skills to take care of any applications and project management.

How to choose an architect for home building?

When you’re trying to decide on an architect to hire, start by making sure that all the professionals you consider specialise in residential architectural services. The architect you choose needs to be an expert in and have plenty of experience working on similar projects to yours.

It’s also important to factor in what other customers think. Look for online reviews of the professionals you find, ask to see portfolios of their work and even ask for references. This will help to give you an idea of whether they’re skilled and reliable.

Make sure you also meet and have a discussion with any architects you’re considering hiring for your home building project. It’s vital for you to get on with them and to share the same vision, otherwise you’ll struggle to get the end result you want.

How long does it take to get plans produced by a residential architect?

Generally the process for having plans produced will only take a month or two. Major works or new builds can take upto ten months to produce. This will depend on the requirements of your project and the number of technical drawings you need produced. An architect will always advise you based on the project how long these will realistically take.
