Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford found in West Yorkshire, England. The town lies on the River Aire along with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is situated in Airedale to the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a decrease, having a population of roughly 19,884 in 2001 and reducing to roughly 18,294 in the 2011 Census. The town's first settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was built in 1986 with the intention of changing the ford. A lot of the older history of the town continues to be present within the town, for example the Bingley Grammar School, founded in the 16th century, which is thought to be 1 of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley has an abundance of local stores, a street market, banks along with the 'Little Theatre'. There are also efficient transport links in the town, with a railway station situated in the town centre along with the Leeds Bradford Airport being in close proximity to the town. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal traverse the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with people often watching barges navigating the locks. Because of its mainly unspoilt habitat, walking and biking in the town is popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. A yearly music festival, Bingley Music Live, is hosted from Myrtle Park, providing a variety of top quality music attracting a considerable audience.
