Smoke Alarm in Elland

Elland

Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Reported as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town derives from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partly or wholly encompassed by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and well established history as a manufacturing and trading town. The town was given a charter to host a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be convened at the Manor of Elland and at two fairs through the year. The town rapidly became a prime location for wool production, and its downturn in the 20th century had a far-reaching impact on the population, with several mills being converted to homes, if they were not destroyed. Quarried near to the town after the establishment of the canal, durable flagstones were transported cheaply all around the country. Elland was the the home of the primary factory of the manufacturer of Gannex goods and it is currently the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which manufactures a variety of old-fashioned kinds of boiled sweets. Suma Wholefoods has actually been located in the town since 2001, which is the largest worker's co-operative. A variety of landmarks are also discovered in the region, including St. Mary the Virgin parish church, the Old Town Hall and Southgate Methodist Church.
