Soffits & Fascias in Orkney

Fascias and soffits are a critical aspect of many guttering systems. Not only do they provide support for the guttering itself, they enhance the aesthetics of your building by creating a clean and tidy finish to the roofline. Fascias or fascia boards are horizontal boards that sit on the edge of the rafters of your roof, closing the end of the roof and providing the support that the guttering is attached to. Soffits run under the fascia boards, closing the gap and protecting the underside of the rafter ends. Soffits are generally ventilated to make it possible for the roof timbers to breathe and to stop any moisture accumulation. Box ends are used where the horizontal fascia meets the diagonal barge board that runs up the edge of the roof profile, supplying a neat finish to an otherwise ugly join.

Fascias and soffits are commonly manufactured from either timber or UPVC. Timber fascias and soffits are widespread on older properties and continue to be popular. However, wooden fascias and soffits can rot with time and expose the rest of the guttering to issues or leaks. More recently, UPVC fascias and soffits have been increasingly popular as they offer a long lasting option that will not rot. UPVC fascias and soffits are available in a number of colours to accommodate any building, although white is extremely popular as it has a traditional appearance. Fascias are also available in ogee moulded designs, where feature grooves are included. These can have a striking effect.

Orkney

Orkney is an island chain in the Northern Isles of Scotland. It is situated 10 miles north of the coast of Caithness and includes 70 islands, of which 20 have settlements. The archipelago has a total area of 523 square miles, meaning that it is the sixth largest Scottish island and the tenth largest island in the UK. Kirkwall is Orkney's most extensive administrative centre. Orkney comprises one of the 32 council areas of Scotland, along with being a constituency of the Scottish Parliament, a lieutenancy area and an one-time county. The regional council is Orkney Islands Council, being one out of three councils in Scotland that have a majority of elected members who are independents. Most of the islands are divided into two groups, the North and South Isles, and a feature of all the islands is the existence of Old Red Sandstone. With a mild climate and considerably fertile soil, agriculture remains to be the most substantial portion of the economy. Exportation of beef, cheese, whisky, beer and fish also continues to have a role in the economy, but there has actually been an increase in areas such as retail, accounting for 17 per cent of total employment. Growing in importance are the wind and marine energy sources, and the island produces in excess of its yearly electricity requirement through these methods. According to the 2011 census, Orkney has a population of 20100, growing 11 per cent since the 2001 census. A variety of events occur on the islands which entice large numbers of citizens and residents, for example the Orkney International Science Festival and the St. Magnus International Arts Festival happening annually in June. FAQs

Can you paint soffits and fascias?

You can paint your soffits and fascias if they’re made of wood. In fact, it’s a good idea to do this every few years, as it can help to preserve them and keep them looking smart.

You can choose what you paint your soffits and fascias with by deciding what kind of look you want to achieve. You can stain them if you want to maintain a natural wood look, or use an exterior gloss or satin paint if you want to change their colour.

how much to repair soffit and fascia?

The soffit and fascia is the outdoor underside region of your roof which would need to be repaired or replaced when it’s in a critical condition. Your soffit and fascia may actually require more frequent replacement or repair depending on the material that the soffit or fascia uses. If you notice your soffit and fascia needs to be replaced, then you’d probably also like to know how much it going to cost. Well, you’ve come to the right place! The price to replace a soffit and fascia can vary significantly which can be a bit annoying when you’re trying to calculate the overall cost you’ll be expected to pay.

The price of a soffit and fascia is based on the following variables:

✓ The materials you wish to use for the new fascia, soffit and guttering

✓ The type of the property. For instance, semi detached houses may come at a lower price due to the less roof space they require when compared to their counterparts, which can reduce the cost of replacement.

✓ If you’re going to also replace the gutter at the same time will also increase the cost of replacement.

✓ The current overall condition of the roof. For example, if you also have broken or slipping roof tiles, the soffits and fascias can be more difficult to replace, hence, increasing the cost of the project.

Generally, the average cost of fitting soffits and fascias as replacement options for your homes will range between £1200 - £3,000. What’s more? Soffits and fascias normally have a per metre cost. The average price of soffits and fascias per metre can range between £100 to £130 when you opt for a white uPVC option.

Which material is best for soffits and fascias?

In general uPVC is used for soffits and fascias as it is very strong and durable. It also requires very little maintenance. However, wood can be used and is still popular on listed properties as it retains the original material. Older and listed buildings may require more traditional materials to be used.

What colour should soffits and fascias be?

Soffits and fascias are available in lots of different colours. These include black, grey, brown, white and cream. It’s also possible to get them in brighter colours like reds, blues and greens.

What colour soffits and fascias you get is entirely up to you, unless you live in a listed building, in which case some rules may apply. Most people choose a colour that matches their roof, walls or window frames to give their property an attractive, colour-coordinated look.
