Stump grinding refers to the process where the stump of a previously felled tree is cleared away. Typically after trees are felled a couple of inches of the trunk and the root system are kept in the earth, making the neighbouring space unusable as well as possibly providing a habitat for insects or harbouring tree diseases such as honey fungus. If your garden has stumps in the ground, having them extracted could open up the garden, offering added space that could be used to improve your lawn or produce fresh areas to fit patio or decking. Professional stump grinding firms can clear away stumps of any size.

The technique typically consists of cutting the stump as low to the ground as possible using a chainsaw, and afterwards making use of specialised stump grinding equipment to grind away the stump. Stumps are ground down to about 10-12 inches under the dirt surface to allow planting, although occasionally landscaping projects may need the stump to be ground deeper than this. The wood chippings that are made by the stump grinding could be either infilled back into the hole and used as compost in other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company could remove it and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. Also, many expert stump grinding companies have specialist small machines that may be used if there is restricted access to your garden such as through a side alleyway.
