Westbury
Westbury is a town and also civil parish in the west of the English region of Wiltshire. It is situated in the much west of Wiltshire, near the border with Somerset. It rests at the north-western side of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 kilometres) southeast of the city of Bath, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the region community of Trowbridge and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of the garrison community of Warminster. Other close-by communities and also cities include Frome, Devizes, Salisbury and also Bristol. According to the 2011 Census, the community has a long-term population of around 14,709 people. In the past, Westbury was often called Westbury-under-the-Plain to differentiate it from other towns of the very same name. Nestled under the north-western bluffs of Salisbury Plain, it is below that the town's most renowned function can be seen: the Westbury White Horse. It is often claimed locally that the White Horse was originally cut right into the chalk face as long ago as the year 878, to commemorate the victory of Alfred the Great over the Danes in the Battle of Eðandun. Nonetheless, scholars think this to be an invention of the late 18th century, as well as no evidence has actually yet been located for the existence of the equine before the 1720s. Westbury centres on its historic marketplace, with the 14th-century churchyard of All Saints' Church behind it. All Saints' has a heavy ring of bells, an Erasmus Holy bible, and also a 16th-century clock with no face created by a regional blacksmith. The west window of the church was contributed by Abraham Laverton, who also built Prospect Square in 1869 and also the close-by Laverton Institute in 1873.
