Ascot is an affluent small town within the eastern region of the English county of Berkshire. It is positioned six miles (9.7 kilometres) south of Windsor, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Bracknell and 25 miles (40 kilometres) west of London. The town comprises of 3 areas: Ascot itself, North Ascot and South Ascot. According to the 2001 Census, Ascot features a permanent population of around 11603. The town is most famous for being the location of Ascot Racecourse, home of the famous Royal Ascot meeting. Held every year in June, Royal Ascot is one of the world's most famous race meetings, steeped in history dating back to 1711. The royal family members attend the meeting, arriving each day inside a horse-drawn carriage, and it continues to be a significant event in the British social calendar. Many of the amenities in the town are associated to the racecourse, but there's a variety of shops in the wide High Street. These include a supermarket, petrol station and numerous cafes. The majority of the buildings are dated from the immediate post-war period with flats above the ground floor retail space. Heatherwood Hospital, the filming location for 'Carry on Matron', was at the western edge of the town. Ascot boasts a station on a bi-section of the railway line from London's Waterloo station to Reading, Bagshot, Aldershot and Guildford, initially built by the London and South Western Railway and now operated by South West Trains. Because of the efficient and frequent service on this line, Ascot has become a commuter centre with its residents travelling westwards to Reading and eastwards to London.
