Bingley
Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford found in West Yorkshire, England. The town lies on the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is located in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. In recent years, the population has dropped, having a population of around 19,884 in 2001 and dropping to around 18,000 as per the 2011 Census. The meaning of the town's name is often thought to be 'Bing's Clearing' and has Saxon origins. The town's initial settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was created in 1986 with the intention of changing the ford. A lot of the older history of the town remains present within the town, like the Bingley Grammar School, established in the 16th century, which is believed to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley features an abundance of local shops, a street market, banks along with the 'Little Theatre'. There are also effective transport links in the town, with a railway station situated in the town centre plus the Leeds Bradford Airport being in close proximity to the town. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal navigate the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with people often viewing barges navigating the locks.
