Alexandria
Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is situated on the River Leven, four miles (6 kilometres) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It is the biggest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed because of the textile market. In 1715, the first bleachfields in the area were established at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the United States grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work within the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it as well. The town's conventional industries, above all cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out.
