Bingley

Bingley is a market town within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford situated in West Yorkshire, England. The town is on the River Aire plus the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is located in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a decrease, having a population of about 19,884 in 2001 and dropping to roughly 18,000 as per the 2011 Census. The definition of the town's name is translated as 'Bing's Clearing' and originates from the Saxon language. The town's initial settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was created in 1986 with the intention of replacing the ford. Much of the older history of the town continues to be present within the town, such as the Bingley Grammar School, established in the 16th century, which is considered to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley features an abundance of local shops, a street market, banks and the 'Little Theatre'. There are also efficient transport links in the town, with a railway station positioned in the town centre and also the Leeds Bradford Airport nearby. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal navigate the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with visitors often watching barges navigating the locks. As a result of its largely unspoilt habitat, walking and cycling in the town proves popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. An annual music festival, Bingley Music Live, is held at Myrtle Park, presenting a variety of top quality music attracting a diverse audience.
