Stump grinding describes the process in which the stump of a previously felled tree is cleared away. Generally after trees are felled a few inches of the trunk and the root system are retained in the ground, making the surrounding space impractical to use and also potentially providing a habitat for insect pests or harbouring tree diseases like honey fungus. If your garden has stumps in the ground, taking them out could open up the area, offering added space to expand your lawn or provide fresh areas to lay patio or decking. Experienced stump grinding businesses can extract stumps of any proportion.

The technique normally includes cutting the stump as close to the ground as possible using a chainsaw, and then using specialised stump grinding equipment to grind away the stump. Stumps are ground down to approximately 10-12 inches underneath the ground surface to allow for replanting, although in some situations landscaping projects might require the stump to be ground deeper than this. The wood chippings that are created by the stump grinding can be either infilled back into the hole and used as compost in other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company may remove it and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. Also, many skilled stump grinding companies have specialist narrow machines that can be employed if there is limited access to your garden for example, via a side passageway.
