Watlington

Watlington is a market town and civil parish about 7 miles (11 km) south of Thame in Oxfordshire, near the county's eastern side and also less than 2 miles (3 km) from its boundary with Buckinghamshire. The church consists of the hamlets of Xmas Common, Greenfield and also Howe Hill, every one of which are in the Chiltern Hills. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 2,727. The Watlington area is likely to have been resolved at a very early day, encouraged by the closeness of the Icknield Way. The toponym indicates "negotiation of Waecel's people" and suggests occupation from around the sixth century. A 9th-century charter by Æthelred of Mercia documents eight 'manses' or significant houses in Watlington. The Domesday Book of 1086 identified the area as an agricultural neighborhood valued at £ 610. Medieval documents suggest that the contemporary road strategy remained in presence in the 14th century, as Cochynes-lane (Couching Street), and Brook Street are recorded. There are records of inns in Watlington given that the 15th century. In 1722 the community's market was provided as being hung on a Saturday. By the end of the 18th century the town had 6 inns, all of which were bought up in the next few years by a neighborhood brewing family members, the Haywards. The variety of accredited properties boosted till late in the 19th century when George Wilkinson, a Methodist bought six of them and shut them down. Today Watlington has three hostelries: the Carriers Arms, The Chequers and The Fat Fox Inn. Parliamentarian troops were billeted at Watlington throughout the English Civil Battle. It is thought that John Hampden remained in the town the night prior to the Battle of Chalgrove Field. In 1664-- 65 the City center was developed at the expense of Thomas Stonor. Its upper space was endowed by Stonor as a grammar school for young boys, and also in 1731 Dame Alice Tipping of Ewelme provided an additional endowment to enhance the variety of students. In 1842 the community Vestry established a National School, which shared the very same rooms in the Town Hall. In 1843 a National College for women was developed alongside St Leonard's church. In 1872 the young boys' and also girls' colleges were absorbed right into a new Board school, which like its precursors was connected to the National Society for Promoting Religious Education. In 1927 the institution was split right into different junior and elderly colleges. In 1956 a new secondary school-- the Icknield Institution-- opened for elderly students and the primary school took over the old facilities. The Icknield School is now Icknield Community College. By 1895 the City center, no more used as a college, was in disrepair. In 1907 it was recovered by public membership. It is a spots at the meeting point of 3 roadways in the centre of the community. Since 1990 Watlington has been twinned with the town of Mansle in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. The Watlington Hoard, a collection of silver products going back to the moment of Alfred the Great in the 9th century, was found in Watlington by James Mather, an amateur metal-detectorist, in 2015. The hoard was ultimately dug deep into, as well as eventually purchased by the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford for £ 1.35 m.

    FAQs

Can I make my neighbour repair their fence?

For a lot of home and property owners in the UK, a common courtesy is being neighbourly and several people find it relatively easy to get along with the folks next door. However, for most individuals, where the major dispute arises most times is due to boundaries which can lead to impasse that may only be resolved through legal action. But since nobody wants that, when boundary issues become more than just passing a comment about the current condition of the fence, you may want to clue yourself up on what to do to get the desired action. If attempts have been made to talk to your neighbour to no avail, there are a couple of things you can consider to make “them next door repair their fence. In this post, we’re going to give you a good insight on these things to help you make informed decisions. Let’s take a look!

Firstly, it should be stated that if the fence poses an immediate danger then the usual legalities doesn’t apply. In this scenario, you may need to report to the local council who’ll take the necessary action on your behalf.

    • Offer assistance. Since the cost of repairing a fence isn’t the cheapest thing to do, a lot of people might not be too eager to carry out this project and any friendly suggestion to do so may not be taken kindly. So if you feel that the this may be the issue, you can try offering some assistance to lessen the financial burden on your neighbour.
    • Put up your own fence. If all attempts fail, you can consider erecting your own fence. However, this must be on your own property and as close to the boundary as possible.
How to tell which fence is yours?

If there’s a fence dividing yours and your neighbour’s properties that needs maintaining or replacing, you’ll want to know who owns it. Start by checking your deeds to see if there’s an existing boundary agreement. If there isn’t, have a chat with them to see if you can come to an arrangement yourselves.

Do I need to tell my neighbours if I’m going to replace my fence?

It’s a good idea to talk to your neighbours before you start any work to avoid confusion along the way. But if the fence is definitely your responsibility and on your property, there’s no legal obligation to notify them. It’s also a myth that you need to erect a fence with the flush side without posts facing your neighbour’s property.

What types of garden fencing are available?

There are quite a few different types of garden fencing that are readily available, so you’ll have plenty to choose from. If you’ve got a strict budget, waney edge panel fencing is a good option. It’s made up of horizontal wood strips and is generally the cheapest type of fencing. Another good option is closed feather-edge panels. These are a really strong type of fence, made up of concrete posts and panels of vertical strips of wood. You can also get more decorative types of fencing with combinations of vertical and horizontal wood strips.
