Stump grinding refers to the procedure where the stump of a felled tree is taken out. Usually after tree felling a couple of inches of the trunk and the root system are retained in the ground, making the adjacent area unusable along with possibly appealing to insects or harbouring tree diseases such as honey fungus. If your back garden has stumps in the soil, removing them could clear the space, providing you with additional space which could be used to increase your lawn size or create new areas to lay patio or decking. Competent stump grinding firms can clear away stumps of any scale.

The method commonly includes trimming the stump as close to the ground as possible working with a chainsaw, and afterwards making use of specialised stump grinding equipment to grind away at the stump. Stumps are ground down to roughly 10-12 inches below the ground surface to enable replanting, however in some cases landscaping projects might require the stump to be ground deeper than this. The wood chipping that is made by the stump grinding could be either infilled back into the hole and used as compost for other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company may remove it for you and dispose of it in an eco-friendly manner. Additionally, many specialist stump grinding companies offer specialist small equipment that could be used if there is restricted access to your garden for example, through a side alley.
