Stump grinding describes the process in which the stump of a felled tree is extracted. Typically during tree felling a couple of inches of the trunk and the root system are left behind in the ground, making the adjacent area unusable as well as potentially appealing to insects or harbouring tree diseases such as honey fungus. If your garden has stumps in the ground, having them removed can clear the location, delivering additional space which you could use to increase your lawn or provide fresh spaces to fit patio or decking. Competent stump grinding companies can extract stumps of any size.

The process usually requires trimming the stump as close to the ground as possible using a chainsaw, and afterwards employing specialist stump grinding equipment to grind away the stump. Stumps are ground down to approximately 10-12 inches below the ground surface to allow for planting, although occasionally landscaping projects may need the stump to be removed deeper than this. The wood chipping that is created by the stump grinding may be either infilled back into the hole and used as compost for other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company may remove it and dispose of it in an eco-friendly way. Additionally, lots of professional stump grinding companies have specialist small equipment that could be employed if there is limited access to your garden for instance, via a side passageway.
