Stump grinding refers to the procedure in which the stump of a tree that has been previously felled is disposed of. Typically during tree felling a couple of inches of the trunk and the root system are left behind in the ground, making the neighbouring area impractical to use along with possibly attracting pests or harbouring tree diseases such as honey fungus. If your back yard has stumps in the ground, extracting them can open up the location, providing you with extra space that could be used to grow your lawn or add new areas to fit patio or decking. Competent stump grinding companies can clear away stumps of any size.

The operation normally involves slicing the stump as close to the ground as possible working with a chainsaw, and then using specialised stump grinding devices to grind away at the stump. Stumps are ground down to roughly 10-12 inches underneath the ground surface to allow planting, however occasionally landscaping projects might require the stump to be removed deeper than this. The wood chipping that is generated by the stump grinding can be either infilled back into the hole and used as mulch in other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company could remove it and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. Furthermore, many experienced stump grinding companies offer specialist slim equipment that may be used if there is limited access to your garden such as through a side passageway.
