Alfreton

Alfreton is a town and civil parish in Amber Valley inside the county of Derbyshire, linking the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire districts. It was a Norman Manor before it became an Urban District, and has a smaller population of about 7971, as per the 2011 census. Traditionally, the villages of Ironville, Riddings, Somercotes and Swanwick form a section of the Manor and also the Urban District, with a population of 24476 in the 2001 census. The presence of effortlessly available and rich seams of coal and ironstone within the area led to the development in significance of mining and iron-working at the end from the medieval period, radically changing the conventional agricultural economy. Significant numbers of smaller workings and pits have been constructed, and Alfreton became the chief coal-mining centre in Derbyshire by the 18th century. The development of those industries contributed significantly to the town's prosperity and attracted substantial numbers of workers, creating Alfreton the third biggest town in the nation by the end of the 18th century. Population growth led to the improvement of brick-making and tile-making industries inside the town, as well as boot-making, repairing and leather as a result of the need for industrial footwear. Because of the decline of the market in the middle of the 20th century, the pits shut in the 1960s and their sites are now employed for other development. Alfreton is a bustling urban centre with a mixture of chain stores and a number of independent businesses, such as pubs, food outlets plus a leisure centre. For all of your property upgrades, be sure to employ vetted professionals in Alfreton to make certain of quality.

FAQs

My garden is sloped, can I install a patio?

Patios are suitable for many gardens. If you do not have a flat area already, consider having some landscaping work done to create one. If your garden is on a very extreme slope, you could have a multi-layered (terraced) patio with steps between each layer. Ask for advice and get quotes if you're not sure.

How to concrete a driveway?

Whether you’re going to hire a professional to create your concrete driveway or are trying DIY, it’s a good idea to know how to create one.

Firstly, make sure you’ve thought carefully about the size and location of your driveway, and mark it out with pegs and string. Then, you’ll need to dig out the area. Ideally this should be about 20cm deep – 10cm for the subbase and 10cm for the concrete layer. Make sure this is level and compress both the soil and the subbase with a compactor if needed.

Then, you’ll need to assemble the formwork for your driveway. These are pegged out planks of wood or metal that support the edges of your driveway while it’s setting. If your driveway is more than 4 metres long, you’ll also need to create control joints to allow the concrete to settle without cracking.

Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to pour on the concrete. You’ll need to level it and ideally give it some texture so the surface has some grip. Cover your concrete driveway with plastic sheeting when you’re happy with the finish and leave it to set. Make sure you don’t walk or drive on it until it’s completely set – this usually takes 3-10 days. Then, you can remove the framework and enjoy your new driveway.

How to resurface a painted concrete patio?

A big benefit to concrete is that you can paint it, making it easy to customise and coordinate with your outside area. However, it’s easy to resurface it too, so if you change your mind or inherit a patio that’s the wrong colour, you don’t need to worry.

Start by cleaning the surface with water and a brush. If you come up against any tough stains, you might need to use a detergent and water mix to remove them. Then you can prepare your resurfacer.

Generally, it’s best to apply resurfacer to a moist surface, although make sure you follow the instructions on the specific product you buy. You’ll need to mix the resurfacer with water, then pour and spread it on with a trowel or brush. You might need to apply multiple coats, and can add texture if you want to make the surface more grippy.

Ensure you protect any expansion joints in your patio with duct tape or weather stripping to stop the resurfacer from filling them in. You can also add a colour agent to your resurfacer before you apply it if you’d like to customise the colour.

Do I need to seal my concrete driveway?

Sealing your driveway isn’t 100% necessary, but it is recommended. It will help keep your driveway in good condition and increase how long it lasts. Sealer should be applied approximately once every 2 years, or when your driveway begins to show signs of deterioration.
