Marlow

Marlow, (traditionally known as Great Marlow or Chipping Marlow) is a town and civil parish within the Wycombe district in south Buckinghamshire, England. It lies on the River Thames, 4 miles (6.5 km) south-southwest of High Wycombe, 5 miles (8 kilometres) west-northwest of Maidenhead and 33 miles (53 kilometres) west of central London. Marlow is documented in the Domesday Book as Merlaue. There has been a bridge over the Thames at Marlow since the reign of King Edward III. The present-day bridge is a suspension bridge, developed by William Tierney Clark in 1832, and was a prototype for the much longer Széchenyi Chain Bridge spanning the River Danube in Budapest. Marlow is served by a train station which is the terminus of a single-track branch line from Maidenhead. The train service is known as the Marlow Donkey, which was the tag given to the steam engines that formerly ran on the line. There is also a club with the exact same name, located close to the railway station. Marlow Rowing Club, founded in 1871, is one of Britain's premier rowing clubs and has produced many Olympic oarsmen featuring Sir Steve Redgrave. The club is based by Marlow Bridge and exercises above and below the lock. The town has a football club called Marlow F.C. There are two regattas connected with Marlow; the Marlow Town Regatta and Marlow International Regatta. Earliest records reveal a regatta occurred yearly on the River Thames in Marlow from 1855. FAQs

How to resurface a painted concrete patio?

A big benefit to concrete is that you can paint it, making it easy to customise and coordinate with your outside area. However, it’s easy to resurface it too, so if you change your mind or inherit a patio that’s the wrong colour, you don’t need to worry.

Start by cleaning the surface with water and a brush. If you come up against any tough stains, you might need to use a detergent and water mix to remove them. Then you can prepare your resurfacer.

Generally, it’s best to apply resurfacer to a moist surface, although make sure you follow the instructions on the specific product you buy. You’ll need to mix the resurfacer with water, then pour and spread it on with a trowel or brush. You might need to apply multiple coats, and can add texture if you want to make the surface more grippy.

Ensure you protect any expansion joints in your patio with duct tape or weather stripping to stop the resurfacer from filling them in. You can also add a colour agent to your resurfacer before you apply it if you’d like to customise the colour.

Do I need to seal my concrete driveway?

Sealing your driveway isn’t 100% necessary, but it is recommended. It will help keep your driveway in good condition and increase how long it lasts. Sealer should be applied approximately once every 2 years, or when your driveway begins to show signs of deterioration.

My garden is sloped, can I install a patio?

Patios are suitable for many gardens. If you do not have a flat area already, consider having some landscaping work done to create one. If your garden is on a very extreme slope, you could have a multi-layered (terraced) patio with steps between each layer. Ask for advice and get quotes if you're not sure.

How to concrete a driveway?

Whether you’re going to hire a professional to create your concrete driveway or are trying DIY, it’s a good idea to know how to create one.

Firstly, make sure you’ve thought carefully about the size and location of your driveway, and mark it out with pegs and string. Then, you’ll need to dig out the area. Ideally this should be about 20cm deep – 10cm for the subbase and 10cm for the concrete layer. Make sure this is level and compress both the soil and the subbase with a compactor if needed.

Then, you’ll need to assemble the formwork for your driveway. These are pegged out planks of wood or metal that support the edges of your driveway while it’s setting. If your driveway is more than 4 metres long, you’ll also need to create control joints to allow the concrete to settle without cracking.

Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to pour on the concrete. You’ll need to level it and ideally give it some texture so the surface has some grip. Cover your concrete driveway with plastic sheeting when you’re happy with the finish and leave it to set. Make sure you don’t walk or drive on it until it’s completely set – this usually takes 3-10 days. Then, you can remove the framework and enjoy your new driveway.
